Breaking Form
“We shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.” Change is inevitable yet we fight against it tooth and nail. It is security we’ve grown accustomed to – our form. We love its predictability, its security, its familiarity. But it’s a façade, a front, a smoke screen. We love it because we have navigated its borders and we know it inside out. But make no mistake, it is a prison, a tomb. Yes, our form is merely a cocoon.
We wrap ourselves in a shroud of mediocrity until it conceals us, assimilates us and finally suffocates us! Can any good come out of it? Oh yes! Definitely! That’s precisely my point. The true benefit of our form cannot be appreciated until we break through it, emerging as a new creature awakening to a new season. It is the resistance of the cocoon that causes the blood of the Monarch Butterfly to flow into its wings enabling it to fly. Without this “dynamic tension” the new creature would fall to the ground limp and lifeless. Once again denied flight and resigned to repeat its former existence. Dressed like a butterfly yet crawling like a caterpillar. So I ask you…Why crawl when you can fly? Do you want to fly? Then embrace the change! Hate it till you love it; curse it till you’re thankful for it. Let it have its way until it can no longer hold you. Then use it to your advantage. Remember as you struggle to free yourself from your forms “death grip”, you’re getting stronger! Come on now, spread those wings. Let them dry in the sun, then like a mother who forgets the labor pains as she stares into the eyes of her baby, forget the form. Forget the pain, forget the struggle, forget the nay sayer’s gospel (“it can’t be done”) and fly! Catch the wind little butterfly, you’re free! There’s so much to see, so little time. Breathe it in, see it all. No ceiling, no walls just open air – fly! Every season has a reason, be aware of this.
Cornerstone Fellowship in Frederick, MD is changing! Why? Because the Pastors, Paul and Cheryl Black are changing, and the congregation is changing. Consumers need commodities but lovers need relationships. The first church to love each other (really love each other) wins! Unfortunately for all of us it usually takes a disaster to awaken us to our own insanity. New Orleans has been devastated but not destroyed. Talk about change! Yet (and rightly so) we are focused on the loss, the death and destruction; but God, who has a much clearer lens and much bigger heart, is doing more good behind the scenes than we can comprehend. At the airport this morning one of the bag handlers said to me “son, flights are full everyday going into New Orleans because this disaster is bringing our country together again.” The media (yes, even the “fair and balanced network” Fox News) are not showing us the unprecedented response of humanity, the miracles, the compassion and the church on the move. Watch what comes out of this disaster. When we finally see the rest of the story maybe then we’ll stop broadcasting those ridiculous “God judged New Orleans” conspiracy theories, and instead help load a truck, send some money and by all means pray. Jason finished a song on the plane en route to Maryland, the chorus says “we are not the same but that’s O.K., we are changing. Seasons change but that’s OK we are changing:” Be aware of your current condition. Are you changing? Why not? Are you asleep at the wheel? Wake up, time is short! Life is lived to its fullest only if we’re conscious of it.
It was (and always is) wonderful being with Paul and Cheryl and the whole Cornerstone clan. You looked rejuvenated, rested and ready to embrace your new season. Thank you for loving on us soooo good! It is a blessing to share life (Zoe) and the undeniable genuine presence of God whenever we’re together.
Thanks for everything, and Paul…..
Well done!
Love, Michael
